Tent for two tall people

My son is 6’4" and I am 6’3". Should we consider a 3man test or are there good light weight 2 man tents that are longer? We will be hiking the AT. I am a teacher and am so impressed by the immediate and thoughtful feedback given to posts on this site. Bravo!

I just got a SD lightning and my 6’3" buddy climbed in and he stretched out and just fit. I love my new tent… but if you are wide AND tall… it may not be right for you. Try to find a two man… the three mans are too stinking heavy!

My friend Saunter, aka “The Two-Meter Man”, at 6’7", really likes the length on his Henry Shires Contrail. It’s not a “real” tent, but if you’re willing to try a single-wall design, look at it.

The Contrail is, unfortunately, a one-person tent, and the OP wants room for 2 big people. I’d suggest Henry Shires’ Squall 2 or Cloudburst 2 or Double Rainbow. I believe, though, that the Double Rainbow is a few inches shorter than the other two. The Squall and Cloudburst have plenty of width and look as though they’d be fine for tall people. I’m only 5’3", but in my Squall 2, even stretched out and with my 80-lb. dog curled up at my feet (he’s a great footwarmer), there is lots of room to spare at both top and bottom. www.tarptent.com

Whatever tent you get, be sure to try it out with both of you and your gear in time to return it if you don’t fit!

I would say the Six Moon Designs Luna Duo is perfect.
Two doors, two vestibules, big and roomy. It sits 4 adults to play cards and two to sleep.
My son is 6’4" and he had plenty of room to spare. I had both sons 6’ and 6’4" and me 5’ 8" and I am large/on the fluffy side plus my gear in the tent to play cards.

The big plus is you can truly sit up anywhere in the tent…not just at the front all hunched over. Sorry I love Henry’s work but hated my Squall, because you cannot really sit up and relax in it.

Thanks to Grannyhiker for the correction on the Contrail. I assumed incorrectly there was a Contrail II! Oops.

I agree, too, that the Contrail, Squall, etc. are not good for socializing or all-day camping, rather for sleeping only. There is a slight weight penalty for any extra room. How they’ll work for you depends on your needs and style.

Hey–at 24 oz each, you might consider two Contrails! Might be good for mental health. I really like my hiking partner, but I think it’s good for us to sleep in separate shelters. I know I don’t snore (hah) or fart (HAH!). And if for some reason one of us needs to leave the trail, or even wants to take an alternate route or pace and meet up later, we have the flexibility to do so.

The bilgey tarp tent is a perfect tent for tall people. My 6’4 hubby used it when he hiked the AT with me.It weighs 2.6 oz I beleive.I used the two person tent because there was only a few ounces difference in the one or two man.I would put this tent up against ANY pre manufactured tent out there. You can do a search on google.I bought from from the guy when he set up at the gathering…then I got the pattern and made another one…SWEET TENT!!!

make your own tent! and then you can have it light, and the way you want it, long, plenty of space, depending on conditions attachable/detachable netting, floor etc with silnylon/velcro and such so on the way you can adjust things as conditions permit… if youve got a sewing machine, and fabric, its relitivly easy to figure out.tarp and tent making where to start i can provide thru email … peace and good luck on the trail…

The Bilgy 2 is a great tent for two tall people.
I think its 2.6 lbs. Habitual HIker and I used one for most of our thru-hike last year. The two of us (we’re relatively short), with our dog at our heads and all our gear inside, so two tall guys should be able to sleep in it.

You might also consider the Stephenson Warmlite line. I carried a 2 person version, which is their smallest, and it only weighed 3#, 3 oz. with the extra windows and larger door. It is silnylon, so it will get some condensation, depending on how much air flow you get. Best designed b-p tent I’ve seen, but very pricey.

I’m 6’2" and used a henry shires squall, it had tons of room in it, 96" long and weighed a little over a pound. It was my sisters and she used it on the trail and never had a drop of water in it, I was very impressed with it. The only problem was you my knees always got dirty crawling into to it, so I purchased a rainbow in which you enter from the side, the double rainbow or any of the the larger henry shire tents will easily accommodate you and your son, for a little over two hundred dollars and around two pounds packed weight. I’ve had quite a few tents but the tarptents have my vote hands down.
