Thinking of planning an end to end and curious if you can make it all the way tenting if you want without having to use shelters.

We prefer tenting but know there are regulations against it at differtent spots. Can you tent at all of the shelters?

Thanks in advance.

I saw people tenting at some of the shelters, but not all. The end-to-enders guide may have more info on the regs. Skyline comes to mind, there was nowhere to tent there. Many of the shelters had space for tents, but not all. I can’t remember if the distance between tentable sites was reasonable.

yes pretty much you can tent the whole way. There are some overused areas that tenting is not allowed at but it is quite clear in the guidebook. going with only the guidebook is more than sufficient info. Tenting, for me hammocking, is fine but there are some superb shelters like Skyline that are a real treat to stay in! I finished my E2E last October and now im going to hike 3 months from Switzerland to Spain! woo woo LT is a great great trail. im thinking about doing it again from the other direction!

There is a large established tenting area on the long trail to the south of Skylight Pond. No water, though. If you’re willing to dry camp, there should be no problem tenting all the way. No, you can’t tent at some shelters - e.g. Montclair Glen, Butler, Taft - unless they’re full, but you can plan around them. Get The Green Mountain Club Long Trail Guide. www.greenmountainclub.org

Many of the LT shelter sites have wood platforms for tenting. These include (but not a complete list) Stratton Pond (north shore tenting area), Little Rock Pond, Cooper Lodge, Emily Proctor, Montclair Glen (1 platform behind lodge, many more down at Hump Brook tenting area), Bamforth Ridge, and Twin Brooks tenting area.
