I am Hikeing the J.M.T. from the Whitney Portal to Lake Tahoe. Starting Date June 27th 2011 to July 31st 2011… I own and can’t decide which of the two tents I should take on this years trip?. The Inner Tent of the North Face Mountain 25 and the North Face. Tadpole 23. Has anyone here ever used or heard of anyone useing Just the Inner Tent of the Mountain 25 under these seasonal conditions in the High Sierras?..I called North Facthe and they said the Inner tent of the Mountain 25 is warmer then the Tadpole
23? I don’t know how much rainfall
if any happens in the early season of the
J.M.T.The package weight is only one pound difference being the Mountain 25 inner tent being 6.5.Pounds as opposed to the Tadpole being 5.8 pounds…

They both seem way too heavy. If you must choose between the two, choose the lighter. As you will be in the mountains, you should be prepared for all sorts of weather.

Also, check snow levels. Is been a big snow year.

Rain happens, when it’s not snowing or hailing. I ran into hail and snow last year in August. Not usually a lot but enough to prepared for it, meaning a waterproof shelter of some sort. I ran into hail and snow last year in August. I personally wouldn’t bring just and inner tent. What’s the point? You might as well cowboy camp with a bug net over your head and save the weight. As jalan said–ouch! If it was a choice of only the two tents I would take Tadpole. If you wanted to save weight just bring the rainfly. If you haven’t purchased the tent yet do more research. There are many lighter choices out there at much lower prices.

In addition to what Jalan and Still Lookin’ have suggested I would add that it is your sleeping bag/blanket that will do the most to keep you warm. Just to get you started with some research check out some of the tarps, tents and bivy sacks at Mountain laurel designs for a few lighter options.
