The facts about Gadget's stats(2005)

Just to let Trail Journal readers know that Gadget was a non-circle member of the 2005 AT Circle Expedition; a bit of information he omitted from his 130 journal entries. Also omitted from his journal entries was that he had van support for almost the entire distance. Of the 130 days that he lists as the duration of his thru-hike, about a dozen to fifteen days were with a backpack and the remaining 115-118 days were day hikes, another fact he omitted from his ‘stats’. Also omitted from his 130 journal entries was any mention of me, as the expedition organizer, and Mary as our support van driver. There were many other omissions but I won’t list them all.

thanks for pointing out the obvious. This includes why people count miles in general.

Why the catty tone, Mr. Doyle?

Is this how well-known and possibly respected hikers behave in the off-season? Why do you think anyone cares about this kind of “he-said, she said nonsense”? Did gadget do something to offend you and cause you to feel the need to apply your revisionism to his experience? We all perceive our hikes individually and journal them in our own ways.

My respect for you, Mr. Doyle, just slipped a few notches. If that’s really your post, yo slid down the scale of jerks toward some other well-known passive-aggressive buffoons.

Thanks in advance for your positive and articulate explaination of this posting. Perhaps there was drink involved. Get over yourself, man. There are some HUGE egos walking the AT. It must be an east-coast thing, this riduculous backbiting and credit-taking.

Have a nice day.

Let the games begin…

I think he was simply making a point that it was a little strange and ironic to take the energy to write a journal based on a thru-hike, and not mention the group he was part of, the fact that it had a leader, and that it was almost entirely van-supported. Does seem like a little bit of an omission tho no? Everyone is entitled to writing what they want in a journal, but if I ommitted a major fact like getting van support, or paying to be part of a hiking club, I think that would be a bit of deception honestly.

And anyway, it doesn´t take a genius to realize the guy was being van-supported. I mean, did you think he really loved camping at roads and gaps that much?!
