The Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association will be having their Autumn conference in Athens, West Virginia, at Concord University from October 8th through the 10th. This is a weekend full of AT information and an opportunity to meet and greet others who are interested in the AT. Many Thru-Hikers from this year and previous years will be in attendance.

The value of this conference – The Gathering – is that newbies or those interested in finding out about the trail have an opportunity to meet those who have done it. Also, many section hikers attend and have information to share regarding their accomplishments, as well.

BUT, it is held, this year, at Athens, West Virginia, which is not accessible by public transportation. If you have a car, it is available. Camping is free, the membership in ALDHA is $7.00 and the conference fee is $10.00 so for $17.00 a great weekend of AT related information is available.

A footnote - there will be information on a lot of trails, not just the AT. There will be slideshows and workshops on the PCT, CDT, Colorado Trail, Cohos Trail, JMT, etc. See www.aldha.org for more information.

As Skylander said, it is a lot of fun too. Lots of people who have walked the walk, and lots of dreamers who hope to do so.

There is also a western Gathering, this year in California, near Donner Pass. See www.aldhawest.org for details.

The program coordinator of the October 2004, ALDHA Gathering is Warren Doyle and he can be contacted at his e-mail wdoyle@montain.org though the time is getting short for planning purposes. The Gathering begins on Friday evening, October 8th and continues through Sunday evening, October 10, 2004.

There is usually a video room, where AT videos are shown informally. But it may not have a dvd player. It may be fully scheduled already. You would need to talk to Warren about that.

If you want to schedule a specific workshop-type showing of the dvd, you really should be there. Warren is a great believer in people supplying their own equipment for workshops. You might be able to borrow a dvd player/projector from another presenter, but you need to take the responsiblity for that, Warren won’t. Unless you have a friend who is willing to take care of bringing/borrowing and setting up the equipment you need to be there with the dvd. This is a do it yourself organization -

I got an email from The ALDHA west guy, and sent him a rough copy…plus I am trying to get it together to be there, if not I may send one with someone, and hope they show it informally, or what have you. I emailed a couple of people, but the ALDHA website doesnt really give you a Contact Us addy…if not, there is always next year…if I aint hiking the PCT.
