I’m going to regret this post, but here goes.
It’s the internet. We all write casually, and i know i make a ton of mistakes. But this is one that i’m not only seeing all over, but i HEAR other hikers say it:
“Sierras”
The word “Sierra” means “range of mountains.” So the Sierra Nevada in CA is a Sierra. When you hike there, you’re hiking in the Sierra, not the Sierras. If you did a multi-month expedition where you hiked in the Sierra Nevada and then hopped over to west Africa and hiked in Sierra Leone (???), then maybe you could say you were hiking in the Sierras.
Sorry, i won’t be a butt and bring it up again. But everyone seems to be saying it wrong, and it would be like if you were a runner and couldn’t pronounce or spell “marathon.”
