Theodore Solomon's Trail

I am looking for an alternative for the JMT. I justed checked for a JMT southbound reservation and July and August are full up! I have heard that the Theodore Solomon’s Trail is a equally nice, but less traveled trail. I have ordered a book,Guide to the Theodore Solomon’s Trail by Dennis Gagnon, but have not yet received it. I have not had too much look doing a Web search either. Does anyone have any leads of the Guide to the Theodore Solomon’s Trail or suggestions about getting onto the JMT southbound out of Yosemite?

One thing to think about is that something like 40% of the available quota spaces are held back for walk up hikers and are issued the day before. Also, any reserved slots that are no-shows are released sometime mid-day on the day they were reserved. You might have better luck getting a walk-up permit mid-week as opposed to a weekend.

Another alternative is to start at a different trailhead than Happy Isles and connect to the JMT. You can use Glacier point and hike downhill to Nevada Falls and rejoin the JMT. You can also hike out of Tuolomne Meadows both ways. This would require that you hike to Yosemite Valley (1-3 days), take the bus back to Tuolomne Meadows and then head south from there.

The little I have read about the Theodore Solomons Trail is that it takes you along a more forested and less traveled route west of the crest.
