i know there are alot of things we talk about for things we take for fun; but i was re-reading my journal entries and was interested to find how often i mentioned missing these couple of things.

1)Ketchup
2)Mustard (they go hand in hand)
3)Coca-cola (bought one every time i saw a vending machine
4)Milk (bought some everytime i came accross a convenience store)
5)a football (would be cool to have a throw at night to relax)

interested in what else everyone else missed and see if they overlapped.

Cherry Coke. Meat. Salads.

Missing hiker friends and worrying about them when they weren’t there. Meat. Hottubs. A body that would function like Superman.

my guitar. Without a doubt.

If you want to know what a hiker misses most during the hike, simply follow him/her when they are in town on a zero day. They will usually be indulging in the things they miss the most!

Missing No More

Pizza, with all the toppings. Served hot, with a cold coke. This thread is making me hungry…

Skittles

Most of the things you miss you can get in towns. Unless you’re the Terminator it’s very hard to get a Harley.

Missing working 80 to 90 hour days in a hot and sweaty kitchen. I miss working six day work weeks and sometimes seven. I miss getting yelled at because a table is taking too long to come out. I miss the verbal abuse of a guest when they feel their food isn’t what thewy expected…

on the fo’real side: I miss fresh vegetables and salads on the trail… but they are never more than five days away so I really do not miss anything…

I had this one time where I could think about was bread. I think our bodies tell us what we need, and it pays to listen. I won’t say that I “miss” friends and family, but did experience an amount of sorrow in not being able to share every awesome moment with them. Some shelter scenes made me miss solitude.

I’m not really sure why, but for all my hiking, I usually end up seeing only 1 or 2 people a day (and that’s a high for me), the last couple of times I was out I went 3 or 4 days before meeting anyone else out hiking. I have to let out a small chuckle whenever someone complains about the trail being “overused”

The things I missed most;
Wife, kids, grandkids my toilet and the morning paper.

I craved RB floats and fried chicken, usually two things easy to get in a town, esp. down South. Sure, the food thing, but I got over that pretty easily. Mostly I missed my husband, house and dog and cat (not necessarily in that order all the time!)
:tongue

Oh yeah, and what Tha Wookie said. BREAD! I missed any kind of bread. That Italian restaurant in Boiling Springs had the BEST bread that came with the meal. We packed out the leftovers with BUTTER and ate it the next day sitting beside I-70. I also usually packed a yogurt and a banana out of town.

ross.

ever thought of a backpacking guitar? i know many people that have them.

I’ve seen them. If they ever produce a guitar that weighs 3 oz, is made of sli-nylon and is able to fold down to the size of a postage stamp…I’ll consider it.

They are cool but…the feeling of loss is replaced by everything else that happens. No doubt I’ll have fleeting thoughts about my motorbike. They’ll both take a backseat when I get into the woods.

Intimate female companionship, variety in foods, intimate female companionship, variety in foods, intimate female companionship, variety in foods…well you get the idea. ps. as for the bread I was super fortunate in that my hiking partner made fresh homemade breads at hostels with kitchen facilities. THANKS ZERO!

I missed my dog the last thousand miles. My friends and fam I could talk to on the phone, at least. I missed music many times during the hike, and I refused to listen to a radio while hiking. The two just don’t go together in IMHO. Thank God for Merlefest and trail buds with a professionally trained and talented singing voice. “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” anyone?
