Thoughts about Traildays

All,
Since this is Trail Days Week, I thought I would share my remembrances about my exposure to Trail Days. When I think back to my time there in 2003, I remember the excitement of the “free” dinner at the Baptist Church and the energy of the crowd of hikers.

I remember the boisterous crowd at the Sidetrack which always managed to spill out on the sidewalk. And Trey trying to enforce the open containers law. And Beer Poet telling stories.

I remember the big crowds at Dot’s and Dot (and her sister) having to lock the doors because the crowd exceeeded the level that they could handle. THe same was true for the Red Barn across the street.

I remember the upbeat nature of the people crowded into the Appletree - including the few who could only manage to get a “room” on the Appletree back porch along with the canine cage.

I remember the uninhibited/impromptu nature of the music festival which took place outside the Mt. Rogers Outfitters.

I remember the lectures at the Rock School which went on til after nine. And the Professor who did the lecture and said that he had once held the unofficial speed record for the AT.

And I remember that Mr. Reese conducted a wedding in the park and the bride wore hiking boots.

If you set out to write a script for a more eclectic gathering, you would fall short of the real thing.

I can’t get to Damascus this year, but I can share my thoughts.

I, too, cannot make it to Traildays this year… but went last year, and enjoyed it thoroughly, as many others did.

Hope you all who are going have a great time and hope to see you some day there again, or on trail…

peace,

I’ll be there and hope all my roudy friends are too! (Both of them) Sorry you guys can’t make it.

I heard they are cutting off the Drum Circle before 12 midnight.

Sunrise said she thought Mountain Man sold the Sidetrack and it has a new owner and a new name.

Things are changing, but it is still TRAIL DAYS!!

See the rest of you there!!
