Thru-Hike Camera

I am thru-hiking the AT this year, starting NOBO in April. I am looking to purchase a good rugged camera for my hike. Preferably one that can take some abuse (rain, cold, heat). Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi Caboose! I used the Nikon Coolpix camera. It has the optical zoom and cost under $100. It can take movies, pictures, and has a timer for taking a picture. I used the timer a lot since I hiked solo. It uses 2 AA batteries which is what my headlight uses also. I used 2 SD cards. My first card was since home through the mail. I carried the camera in a Ziploc bag. I had no problems with the camera. If you buy a new camera, make sure you know how to use all the features of the camera before you hike. That is a good idea for all your equipment. You don't want to fine out something isn't working right on your hike. Cool pix was my choice for my 2014 thru hike too.

I use an Olypus Stylus. It is small light and water resistant to 30 ft. It is also shock resistant. Because of this the camera is nearly indestructable. I dropped it in a stream once and it came out without a problem. The newer Olympus cameras are even more rugged and water proof. The Cool pix does take a much superior picture then my older model Stylus but I'm not sure of the new models.

On the subject of cameras I was talking to a professional photographer one day and he told me that for photographing landscapes film is still far superior. I also have a 35mm stylus and it does take a much nicer landscape picture then the digital stylus.

I have researched and tried numerous cameras. After reading a few blogs on here and watching videos. I think the Olympus Stylus " tough " camera - is a go for me. Great videos - Small - It can shoot underwater video/ photos. It is about 180.00

I am also taking the Samsung EK-GC 110 - it has wi fi - 21X zoom small and has good battery life - $ 500.00

I am considering an Stylus or Cool Pix. I originally planned to use the camera on my phone, but think a real camera is a better option. Once the pictures and videos are taken, how do you upload them to your journal while on the trail? Is it possible to upload at towns? My camera doesn't link with any cameras.

Caboose, I am bringing a Sony CX210 Handycam (which I got a great deal on Amazon, much cheaper than paying retail, $150), this will take my movies, pictures, and can attach to a quick pics (quickpics.com) device that attaches to the end of my hiking pole, so I can take movies while I walk. It also has a built in timer. I also got a Brunton Restore solar charger ($120), it supports usb hookups, which will recharge my phone, GPS, and camera (while not in use). This will be my first Thru-hike so I want to be able to film my journey instead of putting a bunch of pictures together to tell the story. Just my preference.

Good luck and Happy Trails. :cheers

I also used the Nikon Coolpix. It was light and rugged. I kept it in my pocket in a small ziplock. Never had any issues and it took great pictures.
