I dropped packages off on the way in a couple places driving down to New Mexico. I have friends working in the Wind Rivers this summer who’ll resupply me there. One’s actually working for Big Sandy Lodge. I live in Missoula, MT so friends are gonna come see me and bring feed at Chief Joseph, Rogers Pass, and East Glacier. I have some layover days prearanged where the very helpful people will prepurchase grain for me, and the rest of the stops I’ll be able to get into town. Y’all wouldn’t believe how many phone calls I made to figure out my layover days with stock

Good Riding and I look forward to reading more about your ride. This is a dream I hope to fulfill after retirement.

Thanks Wrangler, I appreciate it. Unfortunately the ride is a little sidetracked at the moment. My horse came up lame coming out of the Gila (I’m pretty sure it was those burned switchbacks on Wagontongue), and it was pretty scary for a bit. The vet thought it was most likely a fracture, but the x-rays came back as ringbone. Basically she has an old injury from before I got her that resulted in extra bone growth around her joint, so she’s now a light riding only horse or she’ll probably become permanently lame while she’s still young. No more CDT for her, which sucks but the important thing is she’ll be okay. So I’m getting her settled with my horse trainer in Austin and then hitting the trail again riding my mule and with a new pack mule. It could be a little interesting . . . long ears are stubborn.

It is good that your horse will be well. Hoping all goes well with you and your mules. I have ridden and packed a few mules and some are good people so to speak. Others not so good. Happy Trais.
