Ticks on the CT

How’s the tick situation for the CT? I’ll be hiking with my dog and was wondering if ticks might be a problem? Are there any general guidelines in which elevation might dictate the presence of ticks?

My G/F and I, hiked half the CT last year and encountered zero ticks… I’d say the trail is well graded and should be decent for your dogs paws…

Oh, I thought you meant CT like in Connecticut. We have plenty of ticks! And they’re starting to stay later in the year, pulling them off the dog in December. The good folks of Old Lyme even have a disease named after them, right Bubble?!

Thanks for the reassurance BB. I’m lucky to live high enough in the hills of N. California that I don’t have to worry about ticks or fleas. So, tick and flea prevention is new to me when I set out to travel with my dog. I just don’t trust those powerful chemicals that are way too marketable and do wonders against mother nature.

I know this was about the CT but I was hiking in SNP Last month and pulled 4 ticks off my dog and we have had a few snows I have never had a problem with them out there even in the summer I would say they are staying longer also …Happy trails to all…Tambourine

Encountered no ticks last year August to mid-Sept… Some mosquitos though (early). I also agree with the idea that there is a correlation to high elevation and tick presence (or lack thereof). A lot of the CT is pretty high. As for your dog, yes the trail is well-graded but there are a few sections (more in the southern portion) that might be irritating for non-thickened paws… Perhaps by that time the paws would have calloused enough, if you are going southbound. I shared camp a few nights with a couple and Rottweiler… they would apply a light coating of Musher’s wax on her pads each day. She did fine. Good luck and have a great hike.

I live in Durango and have rarely found ticks on me or my dog, and never found them at the higher elevations along the CT in the San Juans. The Gunnison Basin however, is a different story. If you pass thru any high elevation sagebrush in June or July, watch out - wood ticks can be THICK!
