Being from New Jersey I would advise either April/May or September/October because of the bugs. If at all possible don’t hike June,July or August the Mosquitoes will eat you alive. Hope this will help you out.

Great news ez-does-it. I will be doing my section hike from Port Clinton, PA through NJ/NY starting the first of June. Are the mosquitoes that bad?

The heat and humidity in the summer here in NJ are much worse than the mosquitoes are. Like EZ suggests, April and May is a nice time to hike. But, it could be a bit rainy September/October is probably the best time of the year to hike in NJ because the weather is so crisp and cool.

Being an ex-NJ guy, I loved to hike this area in October into November. Weather is grat for the most part. Not that many people, except peak foliage weekends.

Bilko,
Yes the mosquitoes are that bad plus as pointed out it’s very muggy and humid. I still think September,October are prime months for this section.

Another thing to remember (also from a hiker who spent most of her life living on the NY/NJ border)…ticks are pretty abundant in this area and lyme disease is common among woodsy types…they slow down a bit in the fall, but if you’re hiking in June please remember to do a thorough daily tick check, and carry a pair of tweezers and a small mirror (they like to hide in those hard-to-check places) in your first aid kit…it’ll be worth it!
