How difficult would it be for 2 guys to hitch from Clingman's Dome back down to Fontana Dam, say on a weekday in March?

Trying to figure out a short section hike…

thanks!

That will be a very difficult hitch because it involves at least 4 separate roads and it is quite a haul. It would be very unusual to find someone at the parking lot of Clingman's Dome who is headed to Fontana. Have you consider working with the Hiker Inn. They do a lot of shuttling and are very reasonable and dependable.

It is a great hike but make your reservations at shelters a/s/a/p because they fill up quickly.

I would say hitchhiking would take some time. You could try hitching a ride down from Newfound Gap to Cherokee (441), not much of a problem, a lot of cars are heading that way. After reaching Cherokee your rides will be more difficult to get. From Cherokee hitch a ride over to Bryson City. Hiways 19/74 cross the AT.

I would suggest going to the ATC website looking under shuttles and transportation. There are many shuttle drivers in the area. Plan on paying up to $2 per mile. Some however are cheaper. Shop around. I suggest having the shuttle to start your trip. Park at Fontana Dam and get a shuttle over to Clingman’s Dome/Newfound Gap. Hike back to your car, adds motivation to your hike. That way when you are finished you do not have to wait for any shuttle and you will not be stinking up the shuttle car/van.
