Just wondering what the hiking is like in Vermont from Manchester Center to Hanover, NH in late October... My thru hike was cut short back in '07 by a knee ailment. Do I need to be concerned about weather or hunting seasons?

The biggest risk hiking through Vermont in October is getting run over at road crossings by large vehicles being driven by old leaf peepers. The weather will be crisp. Nights can get pretty cold and you might run into snow. Hunters will be out so wear orange but they generally do not hang around the AT. If the weather hold it is a very nice time to be hiking. Days are also getting pretty short about then also.

Hobbit, I don't have much advice to give you about hiking conditions except to say that it might be similar to the start of your '07 hike; colder, possible snow, less people, empty shelters, slower starting in the morning, and perhaps lower mileage.

But curiosity has made me reply to your post. The main reason I am writing is to get more details on what you’ve been up to and why you’re choosing to hike now. In your last entry you were spelling out your return (in all caps) and quoting The Terminator. That’s badass! What happened? Knee surgery? Half a decade of R.I.C.E.: rest, ice, compress, elevate? I’m glad to see that your schedule opened up enough to do an autumn hike. Will you be bringing your shell with you? Will you be journaling?

Whatever happens and whatever the reasons, best of luck and happy hiking!

Hey Hobbit, I enjoyed your Trail Journal in 2007 very much. Have a good hike whenever you go. Sorry I can't give an advice on the your current consideration.
