I didn’t see on top of Moxie Bald in Maine, or Roan Mountain, Little Rock Knob in Tennessee, Cougar Resevoir in Oregon, Zion, up in the hinterland of Capitol Reef… and byt their standards I cannot believe they left out the over crowded car camping of Yosemite…
their picks:
Bear Mountain State Park - New York, N.Y.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area - Fredericksburg, Texas
Fort Stevens State Park - Astoria, Ore.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park - Golden, Colo.
Henry W. Coe State Park - Morgan Hill, Calif.
Malibu Creek State Park - Malibu, Calif.
McKinney Falls State Park - Austin, Texas
Mohawk Trail State Forest - Charlemont, Mass.
Mount Tamalpais State Park - Mill Valley, Calif.
Pocahontas State Park - Chesterfield, Va.

When an “outdoor” magazine did a feature article on Red Rock Canyon, NV , within 2-3 weeks alot of my favorite weekend trails were now busy. Some of the trails mentioned started looking like a Patagonia catalogue at times, school packs turned backpacks and Nalgeen bottles clanking away, darkly humorous, and painful (The road pulloffs filled with Xterras and other SUV’s, most which had never seen dirt before)
Ice Box was a highway, you could literally see people 100’ fore and aft, and in the narrowed canyon walls, the yells and kids and dogs the whole way back. The tranquility of sunrise at Gunsight Notch, gone. For the adventuresome who could get there, TurtleHead was packed.
Let msn.com, and any other media, list the big name places, and let the yuppies and reebok-hikers and the rest flock there. DH and FF already said it, better not to mention the spots we REALLY love. I don’t want to lose the beauty of sunset at Whitetop Mtn to the screams of some rat-child whining to his/her parents in the background…

It would come as a surprise to the New York State Parks Dept. that camping is allowed at Bear Mountain State Park.
There are no camping facilities there.
I doubt the MSN article (which I couldn’t find) is talking about stealth camping.

Actually, it’s the Bear Mt/Harriman Park. In summer the park tries to discourage “parties” and “groups” of campers. Most tend to trash the place. As long as you stick to the rule of camping at or around the lean-to shelters they leave you alone. But with a city of 8 million nearby they get overrun at times. I avoid it in summer but have the place to myself in winter.
Harriman is a great park but it’s usually crowded.
