I am setting up maildrops for my brother who is hiking this year, can someone suggest the most important top ten or so places where it is hard to resupply and a maildrop would be better? That would be great. Thanks.

go to whiteblaze.net and check out the articles section. there’s a good one in there on the best places for maildrops along the Trail.

I sure could’ve used a nice pizza and coke up on Cheoah Bald.
Does that count? :tongue

Check out Wethercarrot’s posting on White Blaze.net. If I remember correctly, I only had maildrops at Suches, GA, Fontana Dam, NC, Harper’s Ferry, VA, somewhere in New York, Caratunk, ME and Monson, ME. The rest I believe was easy and fun to resupply right in town. Ask your bro what he feels from talking to other 2007 hikers. Lots has changed since I hiked in 2001/2003. I forwarded Weathercarrot’s advice to you and you can pick from the locations he suggests. He’s a good friend of mine and I trust him entirely on this. I am so glad to know that your bro is out there! I really think that he will be more pleased if he buys most of his food and carries less weight by using available towns rather than doing the every 7 days get a drop method. Hope that helps.

PS. Take care of Nurse Catherine when I am gone!

10 seems like alot of worrying about when the PO is open.
1)Fontana Dam if you don’t want to pay the higher prices in the store
2)Harper’s Ferry if you don’t like to hitchhike, almost all hikers stop by the ATC office anyways
3)Bear Mt if you don’t like doing a gas station/deli/hiker box resupply - I could have done without here
4)Glencliff NH, only because the PO is so close to Pack Rat’s hostel and you might be picking up cold gear anyways
5)Monson, ME if you hear rumours about resupply being low or if you want specific things for the last 100 miles.
As for ‘fun’ maildrops, I says pick a place where he is going to take a zero. It was always better when I had time to look through and enjoy what was in my care packages rather than having to just pack it all out with me!

atkins, va and the city past Harriman state park in NY were bad resupplies. NOC was terrible, Neels Gap maildrop would save you from paying for Walasi-Yi’s expensive and limited stock.
