what is the best scale for topo maps for doing a PCT thru hike? 1:24,000?

Whatever they are in the PCT guidebooks. The message is buy and use the PCT guidebooks whic contain the necessary maps.

i agree with ken, just buy the guidebooks and use those maps. they work just fine. i used them all the way through my hike in 2005 and never got lost. some people choose to buy a specific “map pack” for just the jmt section of the trail but still the guidebook maps work just fine for that section.
