Town comparison for zero days

I would like to hear your suggestions regarding picking one town over another for zero days. I am mainly looking for comments about whether one is better for groceries/lodging/etc. than the other.

  1. Would you want to zero in Kent or Salisbury, CT?

  2. Would you want to zero Dalton or Cheshire, MA?

All comments are appreciated.

Thank you.

boy, you’re really planning this whole thing out in detail.

Never went to Salisbury. Kent is only nice because thre’s a shelter just outside of town to stay at and avoid motel costs. Fine grocery store and a couple good restaurants.

Didn’t stop at Cheshire, either, but Dalton is great. Tom Levardi is a really nice guy who runs a hostel there or stay at the Birdcage. Movie theater and grocery in town if you can get a ride.

I recommend Salisbury over Kent. More compact, more ped-friendly. However, the only hotel in S. is pricey, even with a hiker rate. But the one in Kent is even higher. If you’re lucky, a local Kent church will let you tent on its lawn. Kent has a very good outfitter, which Salisbury doesn’t. But you could drop in to Kent, eat, go to the outfitter, then hike back out. Both are okay.

All I remember about Kent was the elephants. I would pick Dalton over the other place any day.

Zeroed in Kent with a sprained ankle. The hotel was very expensive, had to go to the bar to get ice which was only open certain hours. Got a ride south of Kent and got a hotel at 1/3 the cost and a lot nicer. Avoid staying in Kent.

Had one bad experience with Kent,
The manager at the outfitter was hostile towards this young hiker chick and a group of us became involved. little fuzzy on the details. All I can remember was how nice the South was to us hikers and how rude the Northern part of the trai had become.
