WET!!! Just came off the trail last week. Hiked Katahdin to Monson and the 4 river fords just outside Monson were unsafe to cross. I’m sure the rivers are down now but be smart and safe. Lots of injuries to the brave and foolhearty souls who decided to do it anyway. Don’t plan on having dry boots during the hike. Lots of roots, mud, water, and more water. Have fun!!

River crossings in the wilderness were not all that bad could be classified as unsafe,if you tried to cross the river in a hurry. The mud and slippery bog logs did me in… I slipped fell on a bog log and messed up my left knee after six months of walking. What a great adventure this hiking season has been, can’t wait until my knee heals. Life is good on the trail…

I finished the HMW on 21 September and did not find the conditions that bad. Understand Maine is about rocks, roots and muck - all the way - endurance and being careful are the name of the game.
It is frustrating but not dangerous. With that said, one should always be careful during river crossings.
Good Luck.
Hike on!
