hi! i’m planning on hiking south on the jmt july 24-august 14 and was wondering if anyone knows about the trail conditions (do i need an ice ax? or crampons?). thanks so much! happy trails!

Though the cool weather in June slowed things down for a while, the snow that’s left is melting fast now. Given that this was a slightly less than average snow year anyway, by late July, you won’t need any special equipment for snow.

Even in late July of 2006, which was a record snow year, there wasn’t any need for special gear. The previous hikers had worn trails through any remaining snow fields.
