I have had a few situations like this, though not so extreme…
When I was at Reception Battalion upon first entering the Army 14 years ago, the guy on the lower bunk grew up blocks from me, went to neighboring HS, same sports, same general times so would have been competing against each other…
Also, in a line in LV, started talking to a random group, one guy mentions he from Detroit… I ask what suburb (most people are really from the suburbs not the city) but he says Detroit. I ask where, he says Southwest. We start eyeing each other, I ask what area, and on it goes… Turns out we grew up a block apart, same age, he grabs his cell and calls his wife and asks her if she knows me, I and everybody else nearby can hear her over the phone saying “Christian is there? He grew up a block from you idiot !! He was dating my sister L____, that house she lives in she bought from him before he moved!!” Everybody got a good laugh out of the phone conversation. We ended up sitting at the bar laughing about people we knew in common and stuff from the old neighborhood.
In an odd twist, they moved out to Las Vegas, as I moved back to Detroit.
SMall world sometimes…
