Trail from Boston

Hey Guys,

I’m in Boston at a Scientific Conference thingy and I’m staying an extra week with a friend. I would love to take a day trip revisit the trail and maybe hike to one of the shelters if at all pssible.

Can anyone recommend a good section to hike thats within a days drive from Boston. I know we’ll have to drive to Western Mass first and all but it would be fun to revisit old times while I’m here.

From boston you can easily make a number of places pretty much anything in CT, MA, VT, or NH. I was in Boston last weekend and shot up to Mount Washington for some hiking to retrace my steps from years ago. I like Mount Washington as you have a number of options to get to the trail which can include the Auto Road, or hiking up some other trails like tuckermans. The drive is about five hours.

Another option is Killington Mountain area (about 4 hours). The Manchester VT area can be good Straton or Bromley mountain good options.

If you drive from Boston to Glencliff you can hike Moosilauke. That drive would be only a hair over 2 hours from Boston if you go up I93. Also maybe at 2.5 hours will be the Woodstock, Franconia Notch area that gives you access to the Kinsmans, Liberty, Lafayette and a little further gets you to the Garfield Trail head. (take 93 through the notch and turn onto rt. 3 take a right onto dirt road where you see the Gail River Trail head sign). The climb up Garfield from the trail head is not the AT but you will come to the junction of the AT about .2 miles from the top. This junction is also .2 miles from Garfield tent site and 2. something miles from Galehead hut. This is a great mountain esp if you are not in the best hiking condition. It is an easy trail and the views from the top are some of the best in the Whites.
Going to Woodstock will also put you on the backside of Moosilaukee to go up the Beaver Brook Trail (the hardest on the mountain) or across the street heading up to Mt. Wolf, Eliza Brook Shelter and on to the Kinsmans.

Have a great hike and do come to NH not Western MA, there is no comparison.

My daughter called from that section (close to Galehead Hut area) of the AT this morning. The weather is HOT and humid and the views are awesome. Sounds like it is well worth the 2 hour drive if you are up to hiking in the Whites. Not like the green tunnel.
