Trail Guide Book

I have already purchased the LT map and was wondering which trail guide book to buy. Listed on the Green Mountain Club are two guide books; Long Trail Guide and Long Trail End-to-End Guide. Which guide is best? Or both would be best?

Depends how much info you’re looking for. The end to end guide simply lists shelters and other notable features with mileages and brief descriptions, usually related to water quality. It goes into detail regarding town services.

The Long Trail Guide is a heavier thicker account that gives descriptions regarding virtually every twist and turn of the trail. I don’t think it lists any specific town services. I left this one at home for my recent end to end hike.

I just took the map when I did it and was fine with just that. The book just takes up extra space as far as I am concerned. I did it all my planning just from the map. Of course I had people meet me every 4 days with food on the trail (This is the best way.

Does anyone know if they come out with a new End-to-End Guide and/or Long Trail Guide every year? Right now, the GMC site (and Campmor) still has the 2007 versions of both guidebooks, and I was wondering if I should hold out. (I am planning an end-to-end hike from the north in late July).

E2E guides come out every year. Last year the new E2E guide was due out in April - but didn’t make it until June. I think because of some revisions. The Long Trail guide book is not updated every year and my guess is that there won’t be a new one this year.

The GMC site will be the first to announce the new edition. If timing gets tight, you might email the gmc at gmc@greenmountainclub.org - last year I think they let people have pdf’s of the previous year at no charge when it became clear that the E2E wouldn’t be out until June.
