Trail Hygiene (Spec. ACNE)

Although I’m 24 years old, I still get acne pretty regularly…and I was my face twice a day. It’s not sever, but noticeable. My fear is that on the AT I’ll be unable to use Clearasil, and I’m going to break out like crazy.

I’m not a vain person, but this is a serious issue for me. Any suggestions?

Hey, Anon, cute name, by the way

I have the same problem as you do, and it was something I was concerned with when I went on the trial. The thing is, for me at least, I didn’t have any problem with it on the trail. I don’t know if it was being away from the city pollution or not eating the normal junk that I do eat, but it wasn’t as big a problem as I thought it would be. When I got to town i just scrubbed like mad to make sure it was clean ,but didn’t really worry about it on the trail. Definately don’t let this stop you from going on your hike.
Besides, out there, acne doesn’t matter. Trust me!:girl

even though I am 43 I still have this problem too, although the 3.5 month’s I spent on the trail it never seemed like a problem. I believe it’s the water , and the amount you drink up there. Lot’s of it.

Anon,
you will be drinking tons of H2O. Acne doesnt have a chance! You wont have the problems you do at home. I did a pioneer trek w/ 110 youth this June in florida heat. They couldnt bring anything from home. They were all typical teenagers and very horrid at the idea of leaving their cleansers at home. By the second day of sweating and drinking alot of water, most had no blemish in site! They learned many lessons on the trek, but esp. that water is the best purifier of the body.
so no worries and hike on!:tongue

Thanks for the info! That’s one less thing I’ll have to worry about as I plan my hike.

(I also plan on drinking alot more water now at home!)

It won’t be a problem like they said , because of the amount of water your drinking and the amount of exercise your doing. However if your really worried, bring along some alcoholic prep pads, there lightweight and you wont need to wash it off.

We kept a tube of peach pit scrub in the bounce box for that much needed peel in town/hostel.

Odd, that so many folks have had the same experience…too bad that the derm drs. don’t read this post. I found that at home; when I started a regular exercise program, drank lots of water & watched my fat intake; I lost weight & my skin Really Really cleared up. When I went off of the above program, it came back. good luck to you; & us all! :cheers

As everyone else has said, you drink so much water and sweat so much, your pores don’t have a chance of stopping up.
