Question for you thru-hikers, how efficient is the pocketmail device for doing a journal?..thanks for any info…

Very efficient, easy to use. I can’t imagine carrying anything heavier or bulkier. We use pay phones and don’t carry a cell phone. You do need a transcriber to cut and paste the journal entries into your TJ (I just saw a post on the PCT list by someone offering to post before she hikes)

PocketMail users can also send directly to the lists without the sender going through steps to subscribe so if you have trail condition messages for other hikers you can post.

Happy hiking & journaling.

Personally when I go on a long distance walk about again I wouldn’t carry anything for this… the only electronics I carry are a camera and a mp3… Has anyone ever carried a palm pilot or other handheld device and uploaded directly from that? I thought about it because I am about to get a palm tx that has wireless capabilities…

I met someone a couple of years ago who had some kind of plam that enabled him to connect to the intenet through some kind of phone service. He indicated that it was really great but they were disconinuing the service for some reason. Sorry just a vague recollection.

Hey GottaWalk, what do you mean by this statement? I’ve got a pocketmail and can’t wait to use it next year, but I don’t quite understand what this is about. Thanks!

I used a pocket mail but I think I might consider something like a blackberry the next time. It could save hunting for a land line and still gives you cell phone access that I liked having.
