Trail Magic in NH

Hi there,
We’re looking to do some trail magic along the AT in NH this summer. We had thought about the road crossing along Rt. 112 before the Kinsmans, or perhaps up at Rattle River. Does anyone have any specific road crossing, etc that they think would work best? And what do you think about timeframe?

I know we picked up one of the faster hikers, “Junior” a few weeks ago in Pinkham, but I assume most of the rest of pack will be coming through in late July/August? Any ideas would be helpful.

We plan to hike the trail next year but figure while we live up here it would be fun to do some trail magic for this year’s hikers!
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

You mention the Rattle River. Going to US2 crossing of the AT, about 5 miles from Gorham would be a great help to hikers. I had my hardest hitch of the trail here. Also Gorham is a pretty spread out town. Giving rides to town and around town could be the best trail magic you could give a hiker in my opinion. You are not necessarily gonna see tons of hikers like you would see in the south in march, because many are spread out or have quit, but come mid-late august i assume a lot of hikers will come thru. US3/Franconia Notch is a tough crossing for hikers to hitch from sometimes soon, with its close proximity to I-93. Offering rides to North Woodstock could be a great help too. Enjoy

A-Train,
Thanks. That is just the sort of info we’re looking for! We’d be happy to spend a day shuttling people into and around town. We’ll try one of the two places you mentioned (or maybe both)!

A-Train’s idea is good from the perspective of getting a ride, however, the place he mentions is very close to Gorham and the comforts of town. I would suggest finding a place where the trail crosses an unpopulated road and is a few days from a town. Or find where you could drive close to a spot on the trail and hiking a side trail a few miles in to the AT and doing trail magic there. When I hiked, that was always my favorite places to find trail magic.

I can’t give you any ideas as I haven’t been there yet… Already been by Kinsman but would love to run into you north of there. I head out from Franconia Notch on the 14th (Tipee!!:girl ) Wherever you go I’m sure you will be appreciated. Sue/HH

I agree Franconia Notch is the only place that wouldn’t work well (unless you want to set up on the bike path, towing in a BBQ on a bike trailer would be cool). Kinsmans Notch or Rte 2 are good spots and Crawford Notch could work too. All these spots can be hard hitches. I think its hard to predict times to find thrus at the roads but each crossing has a campsite within five miles of it (for NoBos) so mornings could work. Its also common for those planning to go to town to get to the road in the second half of the afternoon.

The NoBo numbers are increasing in spurts. On Sunday 6/27 I met three ten miles north of Hanover at the Moose Mountain Shelter and they said there were about a dozen others in the area.

Ditto on Crawford Notch, it would be a great spot. I used to go their years ago when I was in that area…
