i’m leaving katahdin to go SOBO on june 1. right now, i’m spending a few days in washington, dc and am leaving to go home on saturday. i was thinking about taking skyline drive on the way home and trying to deliver a little trail magic to any NOBO’s that i might encounter. i thought it might be a nice way to introduce my family to the trail and trail life. are there any NOBO’s this far north yet, or would i be wasting my time?

Trail Magic on any level, even if only delivered to a few hikers is a great and much appreciated thing.
I have been so overly blessed by strangers, friends of hikers, and families of hikers that it just amazes me every time I hike.
I did a lot of Magic a few years ago in Lincoln New Hampshire for hikers that I had meet earlier in the year…I would meet them on the South Side of Killington, or in Glenclff at Packrats Hostel and let them know where I lived and would welcome any and all to my home for showers, etc…and it was so nice to see how happy it made people.
Belive me, you will see hikers…even section hikers, and short termers will love you for going the extra mile to show gratitude for them and thier adventures…plus, it makes a hard day glow and the tough times grand when some unexpected yet wonderful thing happens.

I maintain a hut (overnight shelter) in Shenandoah National Park (Pass Mt. Hut). Just got back from a worktrip. To date, there have only been two NOBOs that I recognize who’ve signed in, and maybe at most three more I think might be NOBOs. We’ve also had three flip-floppers who are SOBO, having started at Harpers Ferry.
NOBO Prime Time in SNP is about mid-May through late June. But don’t let that deter you–come on over! As Lion King said, it’s not just thru-hikers who appreciate a little Magic.

Was out backpacking SNP with my trail dawg this weekend, wound up staying at Pass Mt. Hut Sat. night 4/17. Wow, what a difference a day makes!
As I hiked SOBO, met five NOBOs who started early Feb. Then at PMH, there were two more! So between Fri. and Sat., my count (admittedly unscientific) has doubled!
