Trail Magic Suggestions

Hey all,

I am hoping to get about a week off in early April and fly into Atlanta with my hubby to hike on the AT a little bit and to do some trail magic along the way. Can you tell me what was the best trail magic you experienced that I could possibly do considering the circumstances (i.e. I can’t set up a grill or canopy because I am flying in :-)).

I am thinking shuttling, cell phone charging, cookies, drinks, fruit, batteries, fuel canisters/fuel?

Thanks!

You could set up a giant portable tent and serve food at various road crossings up the trail as the main bubble progresses north. Stop at a Walmart and stock up on the gear. Be sure to have plenty of chairs, equipment, and other implements upon which the norovirus can hitch a ride and survive until it infects as many people as possible. See how long you can keep the norovirus going up the trail as you serve food in the numerous states in violation of as many health codes and food prep laws as possible.

Now THAT would be some magic!

Sounds great just to get a pack of cookies, chips, and a cold soft drink. Please Ignore Jebbie as this person has some kind of personal problem. No chairs are necessary.

I agree with martial and would add fruit. Inexpensive to get a bunch of oranges and bananas, they’re refreshing to tired hikers and no one on the trail already has any.

Thanks Martial and aesop! Probably wouldn’t hurt to bring some hand sanitizer.

We thru hiked in 2010 and 2012 and would meet people hiking on the trail with a backpack with protein bars fruit candy bars and cold drinks. They would pass us on the trail and hand us a cold water or pop and a snack that meant a lot to us, that was true magic for someone to hike in and give us that it was great. You don’t have to have a grill, chairs or anything else just that little bit would help us go 10 more miles.

We have had some amazing trail magic over ur years of hiking together. It has varied from the poor Portuguese woman who handed us a bunch of grapes to people who have given us a ride on a wet, cold day to an elaborate hiker feed with every food under the sun.
What has made it “magic” and sometimes brought tears to our eyes is the unexpected act of human kindness, no matter what the trail magic has been.
What ever you have to offer makes it special and “magic” and will give a tired hiker an uplifting feeling that there is human kindness left in this world.
The AT is truly such a Magic place.

A simple Bologna and cheese sandwich with chips and a little debbie cake for desert and a soda, on my 2012 thru-hike their was a couple set up at Dicks Creek Gap and this is exactly what they gave out and it was AWESOME, Just keep it simple like PB&J sandwiches or just stand beside the trail at a road crossing and just hand out Little Debbie cakes that would be great too every body likes Little Debbie.

ALSO, a trash bag to dump trash. Anything that can help eliminate weight.

Rides to town are the most important thing in bad weather.
Anything else from sandwiches & chips & drinks to fruit is a welcome bonus. (would be good to have some Purel for hikers to use so they don’t ingest any virus or bacterias).

To the hikers: Please take a bandana bath of your smelly bits near the last creek b4 the road; & perhaps change into fresh clothes if you want to hitch a ride… i almost always did this before heading into town & it was always appreciated.

Hot days gatoraid. Was awesome snickers. Chips, soda, cheddar goldfish. Steak and eggs lol. Jebb seems to be already infected with some type of neuro toxin. There out there too. It takes all kinds. I’m sure they will appreciate the thought and conversation. No matter what you bring. Paying forward is understood and heart filling as well as self rewarding. Thank for caring. God bless.
