Can anybody help me with this?
While hiking the AT in Vermont around West Hartford I came across a granite marker. This marker is 8"sq. and about 5’tall. It is inscribed with the AT symble and the number 412 on one side and 1748 on the other. The numbers and location may not be exact but I am curious as to it’s meaning and why it is located at that particular point. I know it probably means the distance to the end of the trail but why at that particular location.

It was refering to the granite marker’s approximate distance from Katahdin (412 miles) and Springer (1748 miles). I don’t know why its there but the trail near West Hartford is maintained by the Dartmouth Outing Club, they might know.
