Trail turkeys - Appalachian Trail

This is more of a fall question, but I’ve seen flocks of big, fat turkeys strutting alone the trail. Are they good to eat, or do they have a funky “wild” taste? I could bring my Glock 19 which only weighs 2 lbs loaded.

They taste like crap. I’d leave them alone. And please leave the gun at home as well. No place for a gun out there. Bring some turkey jerky

Don’t listen to bubble head. they taste wonderfull. they eat grains and nuts all year, so they have a sorta nutty flavor!

the glock is a great turkey gun! aim for the head to save the meat. the turkey population in the smokies and in shenandoah NP is extreme, and needs to be thinned out. just ask one of the rangers where a good hunting place is and they will gladly help you out!:pimp

Are you crazy??? Carrying a gun??? Anyway, in NH there is a turkey season for hunting. You would probably have to check in each state you plan to kill them in and if you plan to be legal you would also have to have several hunting licenses.

Johnnie,
Don’t talk like a nut case. Wild turkey is a very good meat. It is also a ‘game bird’ and regulated by each state. You will be doing the hiking and hunting communities a disservice to seriously consider packing a gun. If you think for a moment that you’ll be able to stumble across a turkey, unsling your pack, rummage around inside for your pistol, load it, and shoot it; good luck, the bird will be long gone. Glock 19, can you say, “Effective range on a human size target is 25 yards?”
Enjoy your hike and leave the turkeys to the hunters.

There is a time and place for everything and hunting on a recognized trail is not one of them (even 2 miles off the trail) It is a sign of immaturity and it is irresponsible.
Please keep the guns off the trail before we have to regulate yer butt and put metal detectors at the trail heads and tax yer but to the hills.
I will 911 your ass, like quick.

(now I understand about the hunting going on in the georgia and other plaes, but they are generally local and are aware of us hikers. And there has been hikers shot beause they look like deer).?
