Has Wingfoot ever mentioned what it is that has cornered his interest so much that he’s shutting down Traiplace?

Just curious.

He’s finally giving up the ghost. He hasn’t hiked in like two decades, and everything in his guidebook is heresay. Plus it probably gets tiring censoring others’ views on a trail he doesn’t even know anymore. He’s pushing 70, isn’t he.

Regardless of his miles on the AT being disputed over the years, its obvious he once spent a a lot of time on the AT. For one reason or another he had to stop hiking, my guess would be to make a living to simply support himself. I think maybe he had good intentions when he started trailplace, and moreso a connection to the trail he’d lost when the ldh stopped. Its so much harder than i could ever imagine it wouldve been to leave the ldh behind. I cant even manage a dayhike and its been over a year… If i was wingfoot i wouldve just walked away from the AT altogether after i realized i couldnt ldh for the rest of my life. I mean with all due respect butif you meet some of the guys that have hiked 1000’s of miles of AT over and over wingfoot seems to fit right in if you know what i mean.

I haven’t heard too many complaints about the inaccuracy of his guidebooks. They continue to be a great resource for hikers. So instead of kicking the guy when he’s down maybe it would be better to show some appreciation for all that he’s done for the trail community over the years.

I can’t vouch for Wingfoots personality or character having never met him but maybe all those folks who carp and criticize should put their money where their mouths are and try writing their own guidebooks and creating their own web sites.
