Trailplace.com is FINALLY UP and running…so come one come all and sign in

We are working on setting up Trailforums.com. While we are still in the Beta stages of the site you can sign up for an account now at http://www.trailforums.com/index.cfm?Action=4. As we build the site we welcome any suggestions and feedback. We are hoping to get the AT Forums up and running soon so the 2002 hikers can interact and plan their hike. Please send us suggestions for topics like planning, ground control, environment, Alumni and whatever else you can think of.
Eventually we will integrate the forums with this site so you can go to either trailforums or trailjournals and use the same forum.

Wait, I’m totally out of the loop, so trailplace shut down again!!! I tried checking out the newer trailplace, but the site was very slow to load on my server, so I gave up… Trailforums.com ehhh? I gotta hand it to you guys (Leif, Zipdrive), you are consistent and provide fantastic site(s) for us. Thank you!!! (Just curious, what ever happened to the weather feature here? Sorry i never got around to making that map…)

Yea, I registered there and was using the calendar to see who is starting the AT around when I am next year. Went there today and there was a page saying “Free interactive web services have been discontinued.”.

We were going to catagorize some weather this year but me thinks the “Boyz” were busy. Which they were. When the new forum is up lets get some good input on what we saw and waded through. Oh yeah, Gortex liners in your boots are useless. But boots do make pretty Christmas ornaments when frozen fricken solid on Roan Mt. All sparkley and shiny…oooooo! I think i’m freezing to death?! Flashbacks!

Once question Zipdrive and I have been talking about is if we should require every forums user to register get a login and password. We welcome all of your views on this. The way it is currently setup a user fills out a small form and a password is sent to their e-mail. This allows us to verify that the e-mail users are posting with is correct. This is one reason I like to require registration. One the other hand we don’t want to limit the use of the site. Requiring a login might turn people away… Any thoughts?
The weather is something Zipdrive knows more about, all I can say is that he has been collecting the weather, but we are unsure about some legal rights of using it… and to a lesser degree, how we want to display it.

As an alternative to trailplace.com, I have setup a new planning forum website. Please check it out at

To be the moderate in this situation, I like this forum and think that it’s growing well; I also kinda like Ed’s lay-out for his forum. The last thing I want to see is another split in forums. Could we maybe merge forums here? I think if we gathered all users into one great forum site, we’d all benefit! Just a thought.

Nothing wrong with these forums, however there were bunches of ATML orphans who quickly wanted a forum mirrored (topic-wise) from WF’s, which was my initial design - to give us some place to post our archived information (most of us with 100’s+ of emails worth) so that we could try and recover some of what we lost when WF shutdown. There are also new forum sections up at www.thruhikers.com for the AT, and a few others spread out across the net. I think a “merged” approach to AT forums would be good, but not sure if it will ever happen. We could all certainly benefit from ONE large userbase of knowledge!

It is technically possible to collaborate and have ONE large user base of knowledge, even if the information is displayed, or mirrored over many sites. I am all for that, this is part of what we would like to do with our sites. We are hoping to integrate trailforums, hikerdirectory, trailjournals, and eventually trailchat all into one portal for hikers, and we would like to work with others with similar interests to limit the redundancy of things and increasing the usefulness of all of the valuable information available.
