Training Hikes - Appalachian Trail

Hey there hiking world! My partner and I are gearing up for a thru hike in a few years and are beginning our training hikes this spring. Anyone out there got some suggestions for good hikes? Were looking mostly for 2-7 day hikes within a day's drive of New York City (I'm from West Virginia and he is from Vermont, so hikes in those areas are wonderful too!). We are likely spending some time in Utah as well as taking a vacation somewhere in august, so if you've got a good one out west, we'd love to hear about it!

I recommend from DWG Northward, the Delaware Water Gap is where the trail crosses from PA into NJ at the Delaware River. This section has ridge lines that are open meadows and it is very good hiking. Another great hike on the AT is to take metro North on the Harlem Line to Pawling then hike South to where the AT crosses the Hudson, then take the train back into the city. Any time after April 15 should be good.

The Northville-Placid Trail in upstate NY is a fun one. Sunapee-Monadnock greenway in NH is a nice long weekend hike. The Long Path starting at the GW Bridge and going into the Catskills looks interesting but there is no camping allowed (wink, wink).
