Transcribing TIPS, please

okay, I volunteered and now I have 1 definite and a 2nd possible hiker to transcribe for.

now what?

I know from Stumpknocker’s journal that I should post a link to my own journal every so often… only - I don’t have a journal :frowning: do I still qualify?

Hey people!! if you really want to help out thru hikers and leave no environmental impact, it seems to me that this is a great alternative ;D

You might should just put your email link in the signature line at the bottom of the journal, so that if anyone wants to contact you (questions or suggestions) they’d know where - Don’t think you need a journal account to help out hikers. I had my girlfriend transcribing for me, and I tried sending her my daily notes, and let her compile them, but it was taking her much too much time, and the journals were kinda mechanical, because she didn’t have the contact with the events which I did, so then I made it a point to write my daily journal entries and box them in, along with the date, start location and finish location, daily miles, all the good stuff that was required in the journal, so that she could get down to the real business of transcribing, and my journals would be posted within a day or two of her receiving them. Also, I had images, which I named, and would note that they should be included in this or that days entry - it was a lot more work on my end, I would usually spend an hour or so lying in my bag putting all this together, but that is the requirement. It resulted in a wonderful log of my hike, which was easy for my family and friends to follow along with. - Anyhow, I digress, it will be an adventure for you and the hikers you are working with!!

I thought this info would help out somebody else…
"How funny. No worries.

If they pocketmail you, it’s a breeze - the entry shows up in your email inbox. All you do is copy it and paste it in their Trailjournals account. They need to email you their password and user name before they go, and let you try out one entry, at least. It is helpful if they start each entry with this date, place and miles covered, if they want to keep a record of those stats (I found it very useful in recollection).

I strongly suggest they cc their treasured masterworks to a back-up transcriber who can post while you’re away, or fill in the gaps when you’re busy, and who would also burn their entries to CD, as back-up record. This is a very safe site, but those memories are precious, so why gamble?

Click on the Welcome option at the top left of each page, and change their entry page over to the new stuff each time you post. It makes it easier.

If you’ve agreed to transcribe their written, rained-on, ramen-stained scribbles, god help you. [transcriber :lol - I should be laughing, right Jan? …Jan?]

You can post this if you want.
You’ll have a blast, and get very involved.
Jan (LiteShoe)"

now I know why Stumpknocker’s so fond of you! Thankyou everso much!

the best thing i could recommend is that you start a conversation with yer hiker and if emailing, send them emails or phone calls along the trail. if you get to know yer hiker, and their expectations of their journal, then you will fall right in step with them.

the other thing would be to post them as timely as possible.

I would also post one journal a day, so that it is no big deal for you and also so it will feel to the reader like they are walking the trail alongside of the hiker. it also allows the daily trail journal reader to click yer hiker every day, or the new to trail journals folks to possibly pick yer hiker up mid stream and discover a new friend.

this allows yer hiker to see “per click” counts to encourage them that folks are reading them. maybe i get over board on this, but when i saw my site hits jump from 20k to 30k in several weeks of hiking and then jump to 50k and then 70k, it was pretty darn encouraging…plus, the timely entries allowed loads of folks to sign my guest book with funny and supportive comments.

hope this helps

:lol send me your tips and I will be happy to plug you, too!:happy

Thanks for the tips, burn - I am at Trail Journals daily, so I don’t think timeliness will be a problem on my part. About your journal, I added a more than a couple of those hits. It was in reading your journal that I discovered LiteShoe lives nearby to me.

Thanks to you, too scuba – tho I was joking about the TJ link  I didn’t realize the “frown” smiley looks mad when I typed it in. ;-(
