Transport to Damascus

I’m planning on continuing my AT hike from Damascus this year. I am looking at the most efficient way of getting there from Los Angeles (where I will be flying into from Melbourne Australia). Two options I see are Fly to Nashville, Greyhound to Abingdon, then hitch to Damacus, or Fly into Roanake (via some intermediate city) then grab a greyhound to Abingdon

In all Damascus is a little difficult to get to. I would welcome any suggestions from others who have better knowledge of the transport options avalable to me.

Thanks, Downunda

Is about as close as you are going to get. I wouldn’t think it would be a hard hitch from there to Damascus. They know hikers there. I would take either the cheapest route if $$ isn’t an issue. Or the shortest route as the bus sucks. – BTW I will be taking the dog (Greyhound) from the trail in CT to Trail Days this year. HH

Keeping with what Hamockhngr said…

One can fly also to Knoxville and then take a Greyhound to Abingdon. Along the way, Greyhound passes Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol.

There are three to four buses daily going out of Knoxville to Abingdon.

It also gives you the possiblity of hitting Johnson City where Bob Peoples, of Kincora Hostel, easily could pick you up and you could start from Hampton, TN. Yes, I know you would have to do 30 plus extra miles, but, you would not have to hitch.

Thanks Mr Boo and others for your suggestions thus far.

I was kindly offered a ride. However as I plan to get to Damascus at the very end of April or very early in May the timing for this ride was wrong.
I’ll have a look at my US Atlas to do an eval on the Knoxville option

How about flying into Tri-cities Regional airport, which serves Johnson City TN. It is only 39 miles to Damascus. There are at least nine flights a day on Delta from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tri-cities (TRI) with a connection either in Cincinnati (CVG) or Atlanta (ATL). If you have to hitchhike from there it doesn’t look too bad. It’s less than a 2 mile walk to the main highway. Good luck on your hike.
