You can ride the bus all the way to Medway then either hitch or get a shuttle from the hostel in Millinocket. I think there might also be some sort of cab service in Medway.

The thru hikers’s companion suggests you call the Bangor Chamber of Commerce for that information.: (207)947-0307. In Bangor, change to CYR (pronounced seer) Bus Lines. It leaves Bangor daily at 6pm. In Medway, call the Maine Quest Adventures, 207-746-9615 for a shuttle to Millinocket.

You can take a cab from Millinocket to the bus “station” at Medway, so I assume you can go the other way, too. Wingfoot has Minuteman Taxi in Millinocket, 207-723-2000.

I got off the CYR bus in Medway in '05 and felt a little out of my depth. Ok, A LOT OUT. It’s just a gas station in the middle of the woods! (I don’t know what else I expected)It was almost dark and I had never hitch-hiked b4 in my life. TIME TO FREAK OUT right? The as if prompeted by God, Minuteman Taxi Service, enters stage left. I don’t remember what he charged to get to the AT lodge, but Millinocket 2 Baxter SP was about $45.

According to the new owners of the AT Lodge in Millinocket, the taxi has gone out of business.
And take note: The bus gets in at 7:40 PM - way too late to hitch 20+ miles into the Park that night.

Um, well, if the bus gets in at 7:45 pm, is it feasible to hitch to Millinocket for the night?

(That is what I was planning to do–my hike starts on 6/20/07, so I figured that daylight would be on my side, since the taxi went out of business.)

Talk up bus passengers, sometimes they’ll be getting picked up and will offer a ride. It’s an easy hitch, as most everyone is heading toward Millinocket. A sign with the AT symbol will work for you, locals are very used to having ATers about. If you’d rather not hitch, there are motels within a short walk of the bus stop/general store. Stay tuned, perhaps someone will re-up a taxi service by then. I suggest contact the new AT Lodge owners too, as I think they’re planning shuttle/stay/eat deals.
