Can anyone give me some advice about how to get from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to DC to Charlottesville, VA on public transportation? I am familiar and comfortable on DC's Metro. Be as specific as you can in reguards to bus numbers, the proper name for bus/train terminals etc. I have a ride from Cville to Buena Vista where I will begin another section hike. Thanks.

The cheapest way using public transportation would probably be to find a shuttle to a nearby Metro station, then get to Union Station. From there take Amtrak to Charlottesville.

Here is link to metro with trip planner which lists the bus number and route (I think there are a couple buses K12 and D18 depending on when you are going). Bus leaves from main gate of Andrews to Branch Avenue Metro. Fare is $3.50 or so non rush hour.

Amtrack site is: http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak
Looks like 4 trains a day to Charlottesville spread out over the day. Fares range from $49-$61 depending on which train you catch.
Enjoy the hike.
