I am flying into Albany, NY and was wondering what is the best way to get to the trailhead in Williamstown?

Probably the best way would be a bus. You could take a train to pittsfield and then get on the local bus to williamstown. If you drop me a line we can talk about more.

I didn’t know there was bus service between Albany and Williamstown. You might have better luck between Albany and Bennington.

Last summer I’ve used bus.
Albany -> Pittsfield by bus.
Then Pittsfield -> Williamstown (or North Adams?) by bus.

The main problem is that you’ll wait several hours at Pittsfield (4-5 hrs.) and you’ll get to the trail head late (~10 pm).

I hitchhiked from Pittsfield to Williamstown and it should be easy to do it again.

I called Greyhound Busline and they said there was a bus that runs from downtown Albany to Williamstown on a daily basis. The busline is Bonanza and it arrives in Williamstown at 2:30 PM. The flight that I was looking at arrives in Albany at 8:50 AM. That only gives me 40 minutes to get downtown. The only way that I can take the bus is to arrive the night before.

You could rent a Hertz car in Albany and drop it in Pittsfield. Then hitch or get a cab (Rainbow 413-499-4300 or Arrow 413-499-8604) for about $30.00 to the trail head (Coble or AT).

I thru hiked the Long last September. I rode Greyhound from Indiana to the port authority in NYC. Then I rode Bonanza thru Connecticut to their last stop—Williamstown. It was late so I got a room for the nite then in the morning took a cab to the trailhead. I stayed at the third shelter. If you’re getting a midday start you may want to stay at the first shelter. However it is easily accessed by road and there had been a report of a bear hanging around the picnic table there.
