My friend and I are doing the JMT in Aug. and Sept. and our plan to get from Whitney Portal to Fresno (for our flight home) has fallen through. Any recommendations out there that won’t break the bank?

First you’ll probably have to hitch a ride from Whitney Portal down to Lone Pine, where you can catch the CREST bus. Check out the East Kern Express or Kern River Valley bus services. You can find both (and more options) at

Easier though would be to hitch out of Whitney Portal to Lone Pine and take the CREST bus north to Reno. It’s a straight shot and you’re likely to find more flights out of Reno than Fresno. Good luck and have a great hike!

I think if you compared prices you might consider catching a plane out of Mammoth to Los Angeles and making a connection there. If your timing is right (the Crest bus runs only on Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri) it’s easy to get to Reno as Garrett stated and also to LAX (via bus, train)). Usually flights out of LAX would be cheaper than smaller airports so it’s a matter of weighing the cost and time to determine what’s best.
