I’m getting ready to purchase my ticket to Atlanta. What is the best time to arrive? ie: The night before, that same morning, etc… I will probably try to get someone to shuttle me to Amicallola, and get some denatured alcohol at kmart.

I got my tickets by bus to gainsville and was at the mercy of the bus schedule, which was 10 hr late. I had a shuttle scheduled but had to call a taxi instead due to the wacko bus ride. I got to the shelter at amicallola in the dark… what ever works. I guess it depends on how you will get from atlanta to amicallola. Find out from your shuttle driver the best time.

In March 2000 my partner and I had Wes Wesson(he’s listed in the shuttle drivers section of the handbook) pick us up at the airport in Atlanta. He took us directly to Amicalola falls, and he had stove fuel so we could fill up.
Just a tip about flying into Atlanta. If you are going to be in an aircraft for a long period of time,be sure to drink alot of water while you are flying. The enviormental systems(heat and air conditioning)on aircraft will dehydrate you fast. You don’t want to start your hike on the minus side.Just a friendly tip.Have a great hike.:boy

Flame and I had our oldest son drive us down. When we got there we saw a lot of hiker families that had driven other thru hikers down to Lodge at the falls. One was Starburst who finished with us at Big K. I believe it was 35 hikers that left that first weekend in March of '02. So, some hikers may be able to post their time of departure (from Springer) here and find a ride from someone headed down (or up). Mid March should see several hundred people headed north, either thru hiking or section hiking. But if you are flying, we also saw several hikers brought in by shuttle and cab, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck! Have a great hike! I wish I was headed out again.
