Truckee to PCT TH

Planning a sobo this summer (2014) from Truckee to Tuolumne Meadows. We’re flying into Reno & taking a shuttle to Truckee. Looking to you folks for recommendations on getting from Truckee to the closest PCT TH to begin our sobo hike (and estimated distance to the TH?).

The easiest would be to take a taxi from Truckee to the trailhead at I-80. Don’t know how much it would cost but it’s about 10 miles. Shouldn’t be too bad and you could get dropped off right at the trail. I had to take a taxi from Tahoe City to Northstar a few years ago and it was about $50, but it was also a longer ride, if that helps at all. If you do this have the driver drop you off on the south side of the interstate. Much easier that way.

Option #2 is to take the TART bus to Squaw Valley and hike 4 miles up to the PCT from there.

Option #3 would be to take the TART bus from Truckee to Tahoe City and hike the Tahoe Rim Trail to where it connects to the PCT in the Granite Chief Wilderness. It’s about 12 miles.

Have a great hike!

Thanks Garrett! Having done the TRT and JMT, we’re quite familiar with most of the transportation options in the area but needed this last bit of logistics - much appreciated. (Now we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a continuation of the current low-snow year in the West & hopefully early melt to allow us to start this one by mid-July, finishing by end of July, taking a home break, then hitting Ashland for a nobo of the Oregon PCT no later than Aug. 15.)

There used to be a trail angel at Donner Lake (Pooh Corner). Sorry, don’t have any contact info.
