Truncated track fix

Does anyone out there know how to reduce the file size of gpx tracks downloaded from the AZT site? When I try to load them onto my Garmin etrex it says “truncated track” and I can’t see the whole track. Is there another way around this?
Thanks!

does your unit have expandable memory (sd card)?

If you download the track to the computer
open it in Mapsource
click on “tracks” on the left hand panel
rename the track to " ACTIVE LOG "
upload this to the GPS unit
rename it in the unit

repeat with as many tracks as your unit allows-GPS 76CSx is limited to 20

Recommend using TopoFusion for this. I believe the trial version would work, but it’s a great program created by a fellow AZT’er and I recommend it heartily.

Assuming a thru-hike, import all of the individual passage tracks in TF, merge them, simplify the whole thing down to 10,000 points, then split into 20 tracks of 500 points each, which is standard max capacity for a GPS unit.

This way you get to carry the entire route at once without needing to import more data during the trek. 10,000 pts on an 800 mile long trail should still be sufficient detail for occasional nav / confirm.

That would be convenient, I’ll give that a try when I get on my home computer. Thanks blisterfree!
