Twin Lakes Questions

  1. Does the General Store stock compressed gas (propane/butane) canisters for backpacking stoves?

  2. What overnight accomodations are available? I’m told the Lodge closed in 2010, but that the cabins were still operating.

  3. Has the Willis Gulch bridge been rebuilt?

  4. Is there another alternate route west of town between the two lakes? I’m trying to reach the CDT route to Hope Pass without having to walking 6 miles east to the dam and then 3-1/2 miles back west to pick up the trail.

Thanks.

I’m not sure about your first three questions, but I know the answer to the fourth one.

When you reach mile 05.9 of segment 11 (heading SOBO), continue ahead on a clearly defined trail instead of following the CT as it switchbacks to the left. This trail will take you down to a point that is just west of the town of Twin Lakes. Follow the highway to the right (West)past the end of the lake to where you can see a gaging station on the river. You can wade the river here and turn left on a trail. Follow it about 1 mile heading generally east. This trail crosses Willis Creek at a fairly flat spot then hits the CDT at mile 361.4 where you turn right towards Hope Pass.

Both creeks were easy enough to cross when I was there two years ago late summer, but be aware that they can be very hazardous in the early season.

There is fairly popular mountain bike ride that circles the lake via this route.

In answer to #2 – Last July I stayed at the Twin Lakes Roadhouse. It is right in Twin Lakes and next to the post office. It is about 1.5 mile from where the trail crosses CO-82.

I think I paid somewhere in the range of $60-$70. The price includes a modest continental breakfast. In prime tourist season you’ll need reservatons. Last year you could also order dinner (Italian - delicious). Their website is still up so I assume they are still open.
