UL day pack/bag?

I am switching over from a monster of a pack to a ULA Circuit. My current pack has a detachable top lid, which is very nice to use for day trips or peak climbs while on trail. Since the Circuit doens’t have this feature, I was thinking of making a small silnylon bag with 1/2" webbing, a buckle, and a zipper. Probably under 3 oz. total. I thought I could sling this over a shoulder when I stash my pack for a few hours for side trips.

Does anyone know of a UL product already out there for this? What do you all do for these kinds of side trips (Half Dome, Split Mountain, etc…?)

Thanks

I actually used a seperate “fanny pack” worn in front. I’ve done it a few times and it always seems like a good idea in theory, and each time i’m not happy with it when i’m actually out there. Your idea sounds better. Tell us how well it works.

I’ve also thought about the fanny pack and wearing it in back, only when I do a side trip, but from the ones I’ve seen, I think the home made one might be lighter for the size. Of course this assumes I can make it…
I also noticed the Goss. Gear Whipser–2,000 cu.in. and 3.8 oz, but is seems crazy to carry that large of a pack inside my pack to use on side trips…

I’ll post the results on the home made idea when I get it made.

I carry a little LL Bean day pack made of Sylnylon that only ways a few ounces. It’s good for carrying water bottles and filter to get water when at camp, taking a side trip, picking up a few items in town and loading clothes in to and from the laundry. I cut out a small piece of closed cell foam to stiffen up the back and it doubles as a seat cushion during breaks.

I just noticed @ EMS the other day (not sure where you are) they had small sil nylon daypacks which fold to almost nothing, sorry I didn’t check the weight, I was looking at this line for another reason as they also made duffels, so I was looking to see if one was big enough to fly my pack in and then carry the lightweight duffel.

Good question though, I currently use a traditionally styled pack - Osprey Luna - with a lid that detaches to form a fanny pack and find that very useful at times but have wondered what I would do if I switched to a Vapor Trail or something of that ilk.

I use a Marmot Kompressor , silnylon, 1000ccs, has a removable foam back sheet for support, and sleeve for 2L hydration bag, also a very small lid. It’s 7oz, less if you cut off excess strapping. Folds up really small into its own lid. Good with a hydration bag, not so good with Nalgene bottles.
