Umbreller Hat - Appalachian Trail

Morning thought as I walked to get my morning bagel in the rain this morning: I am curious about ideas for how to hike/backpack all day in the rain, without being driven to misery. I love walking in the rain, but getting water right in the face all day can drive ya nuts. Normally I just wear a hooded raincoat, pack cover, bend the head down and suck it up. I’ve heard of carrying a special backpacking umbrella (lightweight, durable) but never tried it. What about those silly umbrella hats, like the kind you might see people wear around amusement parks on a sunny day? Anyone tried this before for hiking?? Seems a great way to keep water off the face and free the hands.

Backtrack,
I brought one on my '04 hike and remain a staunch advocate of hoodless hiking. You can simply hear better, in addition to venting more while making a fine fashion statement. A word of caution: make sure the band that encircles your head is well padded and spend time hiking in rainy weather before your trek to see how it works for YOU.
