Uncle Johnny's Nolichucky Hostel

Just wondering if any of you have stayed here before. If so, how was it? I’m doing a section hike from US19E up by the Applehouse Shelter to Erwin in late June. Do they offer a shuttle service? Would this be a safe place to leave my car for 3-4 days? Thanks.

I’ve left my car there twice for 4-5 days…no problems.

I have left my car there some for day hikes with no problems. Make sure you check with them and ask permission before leaving. Might not hurt to offer a few bucks as a gesture of courtesy. My experience (and that of fellow thru-hikers last year) has been very positive.

Johnny is great to deal with. He provided me with a shuttle about a month ago. I left my car there, stayed at the hostel overnight, and he shuttled me to davenport gap early the next morning (I had made arrangements with him a couple of months in advance). It was nice because his place is right on the trail so I just walked back to the car with no other arrangements to worry about. The rates were reasonable and Johnny and everyone who works for him were very nice.

Whatever you do, do not park at 19E.

Johnny’s will take good care of you. Just don’t get drunk or smoke dope anywhere near his place. Ms. Janet’s, in Erwin, would also be a good option for you.

another option: If you stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Erwin, you can leave your car there at no cost. You could still hire U.J. to shuttle you. I have had good experiences at both Uncle Johnny’s and Holiday Inn.

just a few weeks ago, we used UJ for shuttle service and it was very good. We did the Holiday Inn Express and if you can afford it, its much nicer accommodations. Hiker rate was $62 a night.
