It’s about time we (men?) tell the truth :
who and when walks underwear-less?
pros and cons please.
and without socks too.

Often on shorter weekend hikes, I take my sarong (yes, men wear them in Malaysia and Thailand and any fellow Hash House Harriers out there know what I am talking about) for nightime wear. Doubles as a neck and shoulder scarf-type wrap as well, get caught in a viscious sand storm in the Mojave desert and you’ll double appreciate it as a head/face wrap. Needless to say, you wear it commando style.
Won’t be bringing a kilt to hike in (yes, I own one too, even wore it to a final exam once as a dare, careful folding your legs in them !!! ) but the sarong might get mail dropped in for warmer weather.

Swim shorts with mesh inserts for hiking
Speedos for under rain pants (need that support) and sleeping.
Both were light and dried quickly. Had no chaffing the whole trail.
Couldn’t go without socks…even wore liners to bed which helped keep my bag clean. Never had a blister or infection.
In the bag I wore long silk underwear and used a silk bag liner. This combo kept the bag clean as new the whole trip…never had to wash it and was never cold.

When I hike I wear a speedo running short with a dry wick material inside which is sorta like a brief. I couldn’t imagine going without socks. When I was in high school no socks were high fashion, but now I always wear socks. I can’t get used to sock liners though. My feet slip around in my sock whit liners.

wear a kilt and go commando.
dont follow me or haiku up the approach trail mmmkaaay?
Bloody Cactus
Hiking pants with a liner. If the pants didn’t have a liner it would have to be boxers. I can’t stand briefs anymore. For cold weather I’ve used polyester long johns, but if they sag they chafe. I’ve got a pair of polyester/lycra long johns ordered from Campmor. Hopefully, they’ll fit a bit more snug and won’t sag.

I don’t wear underwear on the trail. Don’t wear it in town, either. I usually go without socks, since I usually hike in sandals. But sometimes I use them with sandals, if my feet are getting dry. I always use them with shoes. If you didn’t you might have some serious odor issues. My feet dont stink in sandals.

Within days of leaving Katahdin last summer, I was chafing. So I switched from my hiking underwear to Adidas running shorts with mesh liner, and I was fine for the next 2,100 miles. I’m sure swim trunks with mesh would be fine, too. I guess a sarong would work, but I’d prefer to hike without having to wear skirts.

Patagonia capaline boxers under loose fitting hiking shorts, comfortable and they double as swim trunks.

Im another free baller. One less thing to have to worry about hanging out to dry, its less to carry, and less to have to worry about putting in the pack.

I’m flashing my jewels,
At those I’m above.
The sun’s on my parts,
And I’m ready for love.
Let the sight of me chase,
Everyone from the place.
I’m laughing at crowds,
There’s a smile on my face.
I walk down the lane,
With a happy refrain.
Just swingin’, swingin’ in the rain…
(Here’s where he plays in the water…)
Slash! Splash!
Flop! Flop!
(Now here’s the part where the cop comes up to him…)
I’m swingin’ and floppin’ in the rain…
