Anyone got a slick way to do this? Can upload text, but what about pictures?

Uploading pictures to TrailJournals.com from iPhone
The only way I know to update journal entries is to have a transceiver do it for you. We plan to use an iPhone to send emails with our daily entries to the transceiver. I assume you will be trying to update yourself directly through the phone. You will find phone reception very spotty on the trail and difficult to do every day. If you use email you'll be able to attach your photos to your mail and the transceiver can put them on the journal. Incidentally the battery on your phone will discharge quickly if you leave it on as you hike. It will continuously seek a cell tower when you are out of range which it will be on the trail. I suggest you power down the phone and only turn it on when composing mail and sending or talking on the phone. We plan to write our emails on airplane mode and only turn it to send and receive.

I hiked with an iphone last year, and trailjournaled from it. I uploaded my entries directly but couldn't do the same with photos. I put them on flickr and my husband would upload them to the gallery occasionally.
Me, I left my phone on all day every day. I put it in airplane mode so it wouldn’t seek. I also turned off 3G, which uses more power and doesn’t work in most of the backcountry anyway. I listened to podcasts, audiobooks, and music a lot, checked email, took pictures, used facebook, and wrote my journal on it. With the addition of a 3G juice I never ran out of power between towns. I did turn it off at night.

You might want to check out Postholer.com. I know you can upload pics directly to a journal on this site. Not used much for AT, but a lot of PCT and CDT hikers post there.

Curious as to how you're entering your journal into these phone devices. I have a Droid HTC and being a touch-typist, it is frustrating to me to try to type anything more than a simple text, using my thumbs and the teensy-weensy keyboard (and forget attempting to do much editing of what I've typed). Are you typing with thumb? using a dictation app? a stylus app or what?

Thanks for responses. Especially Handlebar as he used an iPhone on CDT last year (I think). Must have had someone upload his pictures or did from PC's in town?
Since I’m just doing a long AT section, I may just wait till I’m back home to add pictures to text journals. I plan to use “two finger” method of typing on phone in landscape view to enter journals into Notes app, then copy and paste into trailjournals.com when I can. Agree that you have to keep phone in airport mode unless actively checking location with GPS or attempting a connection with phone.

Not sure if it will work for your phone but I can post both text and pics from my phone. I have pantech messaging phone. The way I did it was after login I selected 'simple' under photo and selected camera as load from, then pick the pic I wanted to upload. After that I started my journal and selected phote to use. It's pretty much all I did and it worked for me. You can check my test journal under 'stylin & tony' in 2011 AT. I first tried selecting just upload and found you can't without some operating system.

In a sense that is what the transcriber is, someone who repeats what you wrote and sends it out to the world. But actually I typed that reply from an iPod touch and it didn't recognize the word transcriber and did a global correction of my spelling and I didn't see it when I hit send.
Having a good transcriber with a real computer to clean up your journals before posting is certainly a plus.
