Looking to enter the A.T. at a tough spot: I want to take US 76 west from Dicks Creek Gap for 2.8 miles and turn right onto USFS 72. Descriptions of USFS 72(AKA Charlies Creek Road) at Blue Ridge Gap include 'sometime passable', 'poor road', 'abandoned' and 'narrow and rutted'. Access by passenger car seems problematic at best. COULD ANYONE VERIFY THE CONDITION OF THIS ROAD? Thanks! Fraser Fir

unless you have 4 wd high clearance vehicle - like a jeep - you will not be able to drive to blue ridge gap. you will be on pavement until a mile or bit more from blue ridge where you can leave your vehicle and walk to the gap. i think its better just to park at dicks creek or deep gap than worry about this road. this road doesn't get much maintenance; its proabably been about 5 years since you could drive to the gap in a non jeep vehicle. caveat - i have not been there this year but i have not read or heard anything to indicate that my description is not accurate.

Thank you Miles. Much appreciated. Likewise, I am wanting to know if anyone had ever parked down at the gate off of Blye Gap Road via Old Hwy 64. I am trying to meet friends at BoyGap and head north. How far of a walk from the gate to the AT? Is it legal to park on Blye Gap Road ( overnight) thanks, Fraser Fir
